Good Knights

With the Knighting of Van Morrison, I became curious as to other Rock stars who have had a similar honor. 51 years ago the Beatles became the first rock stars to receive royal honors and then six more Rockers earned the title of Sir. They are: Sir Paul McCartney, Sir Mick Jagger, Sir Cliff Richard, Sir Tom Jones, Sir Elton John and then Sir George Ivan Morrison. Receiving the title of Knight is the highest honor, however, there are lesser honors and this year about 1000 received this lesser honor.
Among the lesser honors are: Robert Plant, Jimmy Page, Dave Gilmour, Brian May (and not the rest of Queen), Mark Knopfler, Rod Stewart, and Gordon “Sting “ Summer, just to name some. It should be noted that that David Bowie actually declined honors.
Women who have been given honors are called Dames which is the highest form of title for British females. There are not many women in rock and among them are: Joan Armatrading, Kate Bush, Annie Lennex and Adele have been given lesser honors than a Dame-ship.

We just found out about an exciting and beautiful line of resin-based incense sticks to compliment the Fred Soll line. Many of them are Frankincense based. We made sure to get a nice sampling of what they have. We are slowly rolling them out so as to not confuse ourselves as much as our clients. We will begin with Jerusalem Blend. This is a natural, resin-based stick form of incense. It is a blend of frankincense, myrrh and fragrant oils. Jerusalem blend yields a classic frankincense and myrrh mix with peppery, orange, bergamot notes. Fantastic. $6 for 10 sticks. That’s not cheap, but what you get is well worth it.

We tried to blog this before, but we had some pooter-related issues, so here it is, a bit late. Yesterday marks the 39th anniversary of Fleetwood Mac’s Rumours. For many, I don’t have to tell how epic this release was. For others, well, it was epic. It’s one of very few albums to go diamond. Considering how many great releases there were in 1977, it still won the Grammy for Album of the Year. That’s not too shabby for a once little blues band.

The holidays are here. This has always been a poignant moment for me. Woodstock Trading Company opened our doors in 1988 and many of our first customers were in high school or in their early 20’s. Many have moved away from the south Jersey area over time. However, during the holiday times so many return to this area to visit family. Woodstock has become somewhat of a destination stop for our many people. They come to visit and bring us their children and grandchildren as well. The circle that binds us is the love of music and art that defines the rock & roll experience. Thank you all for being part of my family. Keep in touch…fondly MOM.

Looking forward to the 4^th of July.  It is another holiday where you do not have to be stressed about purchasing gifts or any obligations.  I love working on these holidays!!  Woodstock has been opened for 26 years and is family friendly in many ways.  Kids who were in our store when it opened are now parents and also grandparents.  We have had the pleasure of seeing these generations in our store over the years.  However, many of you have moved away and it is during the holidays that people return to see family members who still live in the Delaware valley.  Seth has been announcing HAPPY HOURS on different days and he says we will do a HAPPY DAY for the 4^th by giving a 10% discount on any purchases for this day….  I will be in the store on the 4^th from 11-3pm…please if you are in the area come in and say HI MOM!!

Happy Birthday  Phil Lesh

March 15, 1940 is the birthday of Phil Lesh, bass player for The Grateful Dead and still going strong.   Phil Lesh and Friends formed in 1998, after he’d returned to performing following the death of  Jerry Garcia in 1995.  His musical journey remains fresh by constantly and consistently putting together bands featuring exciting musicians and singers, therefore, keeping the music of the Grateful Dead moving forward into the future.

Some of the members who comprised the  Phil Lesh and Friends ensemble over the years include a who’s who of performers: Trey Anastasio and Page McConnell of Phish, Jorma Kaukonen, David Nelson, John Molo, John Scofield, Greg Osby, Ryan Adams, Larry Campbell and Teresa Williams, Warren Haynes, Jimmy Herring, Joan Osborne, Derek Trucks, Susan Tedeschi, Bill Payne and Paul Barrere of Little Feat.

On this day 3/13/2006 – Metallica inducts Black Sabbath into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Metallica also performs a short set of Sabbath songs during the event at New York’s Waldorf Astoria Hotel. Other inductees include Blondie, Miles Davis, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Sex Pistols and A&M Records co-founders Herb Alpert and Jerry Moss. Just curious….what is your favorite Black Sabbath song? When it comes to personal performances, everyone has problems. One must sometimes think out of the box for a solution. For example, on this day (march 12th) 1963, The Beatles played at the Granada Cinema in Bedford. John Lennon, suffering from a terrible cold, was unable to perform. The band rearranged the set so that George and Paul could sing the parts that John wold have done. It makes me wonder how many times major musicians have adapted to unusual situations.
